Penguin Theatre present their new show Later, After.
Leaving war doesn’t mean finding peace
A police cell, London, so late it’s nearly morning. Alex has been arrested after punching a man unconscious (“He missed. I don’t.”). But is he fit to be charged? Duty psychiatrist Helen Ashton is called to assess him. Alex – a former Ammunition Technician, “bomb disposal officer to you” – isn’t impressed. He doesn’t want to be assessed. Or diagnosed. Or treated. After all, what’s the point?
Influenced by real events, Later, After lays bare the impact of doing a job that’s beyond stressful, surviving war, then having to face the culture shock of the transition from military to civilian life.
Written by Jane Harvey-Berrick and ex-AT Mike Speirs, Later, After is directed by Elizabeth Thick, features Neil Anthony as Alex Hunter and Flora Sowerby as Dr Helen Ashton.
Director Elizabeth Thick said “We’re thrilled to be bringing Later, After to Create Theatre. The audience response to the play has, so far, been fantastic, and – as we’re still developing the work prior to touring in 2016 – we’re keen to hear others’ views”.
